Greetings and Happy February
One month down and 11 more to go!
With January now in the rearview mirror and March on the horizon, I hope all of you had a solid start to 2021 and were able to set key objectives and goals for this year. If you haven’t done this yet, or have not sat down and clarified them with your teams, feel free to refer back to my post last month. You can easily access it by clicking the following link.
2021 – The Year of __________________?
To move forward and begin this month’s GDI Blog entry, I would like to start off with a question which as the founder, owner, and active director of GDI, I have constantly struggled with for many years.
How can I motivate my team to be the best they can be and take ownership of their positions?
Although I have struggled with this question, this year WILL be different. Along with setting goals and objectives and clarifying them with my team, I have chosen three words, or values, to follow in 2021 with the objective of finding an answer to this question.
These three words have great and deep meaning to me and my Team. We are committed to focus on these words, their powerful meanings, and use them to guide our actions, decisions, and direction. Here is what they mean to me and my promise to you, our customers, and my whole team.
Through providing a strong sense of trust and safety, mutual understanding, and clear objectives, I aim to provide opportunities, not just our leaders, but also our whole team to learn and grow their ability to make decisions, take ownership and accountability, and pave the path to success for both company and self.
I will take the time needed with my team to listen, ask questions, and show that I genuinely care about the wellbeing of the individual, as well as the team. Both scheduled talks and random connections will allow me and my team to better connect with each other, solve issues in a timely and productive manner, and move towards success, both professionally and personally. I believe this is essential to a strong business and success.
I will strive to lead by example. I will be involved with the various tasks and goals my team is focusing on, and take a genuine interest in all operations. Yet with that said, I will also be stepping back and delegating authority to the leaders and all team members. I believe this will instill the trust needed to allow the business to grow exponentially to levels I have not imagined possible.
It is my hope you can also use these three key values to empower your team this year as well!
And if you have not already done so, try to find the word or words that you can use to guide you through this year as well. And if 2021 is anything like last year, having a clear focus with guiding values, will only make it easier to stay positive, grow professionally and personally, and reach the success you’ve always dreamt about.
In addition to the three guiding values above, I strongly recommend also reading a post by the Hall of Fame, and award-winning speaker Eric Chester, “10 Ways to Encourage Employees to Take Ownership in their Work.”
I hope you all have a great February and all the best with Empowering your team and your further movement forward to success!
